Director and cinematographer David Čálek (1971) studied cinematography and documentary directing at FAMU. Since 1998, he has made over 40 feature-length documentary films, . The film Heaven and Hell (HBO) was premiered at the 2011 SXSW festival in Austin, USA. He has also made 8 feature films, including Mamas & Papas, winner of the Best Film Award at the 2011 Hamptons festival, Mars, which won the BEST Feature VFX Camera Award at the 2019 MISCIFI in the USA. The film Clibing higher won first prize at the 2017 BANFF festival in Canada for best feature documentary. The film War Reporter won first prize at the 2024 Warsaw Film Festival, the Award for Best Cinematography in a Documentary from the Czech Academy of Sciences, and was nominated for the 2025 Czech Lion Award.
