Ondřej Šálek

director

Mgr. MgA. Ondřej Šálek, although forged by several universities, including JAMU, FAMU, or Film Studies in Brno, has experienced the best school of life during his long-term stays in Brazil or Kenya.

After a few years, he successfully failed to complete his studies in documentary film at FAMU in Prague. Yet two years after his departure, he won the best documentary award at the FAMUFEST school festival for his bachelor film *Good News* (2019). This film was also selected for the Czech competition section One World 2019.

His film work is dominated by themes such as the crisis of male identity, empathy for people on the margins, and the overwhelming emergence of digital culture. One year he was even obsessed with a film about Jaromir Jagr. Although his main focus is on documentary filmmaking, he has also produced several feature projects that often combine documentary stylization along with precise staging of the reality being filmed.

His films have been screened at international film festivals such as GoEast and DocLisboa. They have also undergone their local cinema distribution, or through the KineDok or One World in the Regions programs they have reached the more remote corners of the Czech basin.
