Glorious Deserter

Glorious Deserter is an engaging film about forgotten victims of Nazi discrimination - accompanying four Austrian countrymen, who deserted from the Wehrmacht, into a real-yet-metaphorical winter of starvation where the past and the present merge. The documentary-style film is a montage of the real destinies, it situates the narrative logics of both fiction film and documentary into a continuously unstable mutual relationship. The director wrests wild poetry from the turmoil of world events and creates a powerful and moving portrait of the last, forgotten victims of the Nazis.
