Birth and the Elements

Režie: Tinna Björk Ólafsdóttir

Synopse

In Birth and the Elements, the camera moves between intimate stories, breathtaking visuals, and the pulse of stirring music to invite viewers into the profound and complex world of childbirth. The film begins with Sarah, a mother determined to have a natural, holistic birth—only to find her wishes overstepped by a cascade of medical interventions, beginning with a synthetic hormone injection against her will. A decision that would ultimately lead to an unwanted C-section, acknowledged later by the doctor as an unnecessary mistake. This moment ignites a journey for the filmmaker, a doula who has witnessed countless birth stories of abuse in the system, to explore the hidden trauma caused by overmedicalized birth, a trauma so normalized in modern society that we no longer see it.

Through personal stories—from mothers fighting for their birth autonomy to birth advocates and experts—the film reveals the hidden costs of over-medicalization: the erosion of women’s autonomy and dignity, and its deep impact on physical and emotional well-being for the whole family. As interventions become increasingly routine in hospitals worldwide, Birth and the Elements challenges the status quo, advocating for a shift in how we approach birth.

Rather than pointing fingers at the system, the film calls for a cultural shift within hospitals, advocating for practices that respect women’s choices and empower them during labor.

This film invites viewers to reconsider how we give birth and, in doing so, how we can shift the paradigm to create healthier, more empowering experiences for mothers and families in Europe. The film’s incredibly creative style brings this message to life, portraying the characters in between their stories with striking aerial footage, much like the film Human. It creatively blends together these striking scenes and thoughtfully crafted music together to pursuit a visually captivating and unforgettable cinematic experience.
