Nikolay Volkov was born in the city of Chaplygin, Lipetsk Region in 1952. He graduated in 1981 from the Russian State University of Cinematography, where he studied in the camera operator department. As a director of photography, he has filmed more than 60 documentary movies with leading documentary film directors. He has won numerous awards at international and Russian film festivals. He has served on the jury at various international documentary film festivals. In 2011 he made his debut as a director with the movie "Polarnik", which won more than seven awards at international film festivals, including a Silver Gentian for the best medium length film at the 58th Film Festival in Trento, Italy. "Ioann & Marfa" is Nikolay Volkov's latest work as a director.
