Ulrike Koch was born in Birkenfeld/Nahe, Germany and studied sinology, japanology und ethnology at Zürich University as well as at Beijing University, China. Before directing her own films, she worked as casting director on The Last Emperor by Bernardo Bertolucci and assistant director on Urga by Nikita Mikhalkov. Her own films include Guge - Restoring for the Buddhas as well as the award-winning feature long documentaries Ässhäk - Tales from the Sahara and The Saltmen of Tibet. She lives as an independent filmmaker in Zollikon near Zürich.
