2016 graduated from National University of the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy in Journalism. Her debut film Birthmark awarded best debut short documentary at the Bastau International Debut and Student Film Festival and best student documentary at the XXXVI Pärnu Film Festival. 2022 the documentary series Winners produced and directed by Mariia Shevchenko is broadcasted on Suspilne TV (Ukrainian public broadcaster). Winners is composed of 12 stories of sports coaches, who achieve high results in small towns in Ukraine. From the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia, Mariia documents the war, filming stories of soldiers, volunteers and civilians in its post-apocalyptic dimension. Her documentary Children of War was screened at the film festival in Sheffield.
