The film explores the story of several deaths of young Tajik conscripts as told by their families in a desperate attempt to seek justice. "Dedovshchina" delves deep into the culture of violence in the Tajik army.
Young people refuse the official call-ups to military service that the government announces every spring and fall. With a shortage of soldiers for civilian mobilization, the government takes advantage of opportunities to kidnap young men on the street and conduct house raids. These kidnappings, known as "oblavas" (raids), take place twice a year and cause extreme stress to any young men who may be forcibly conscripted into the army. We follow several families whose children have died as a result of harassment and torture in the army, and follow what happens next.
