Na periferii Evropy, kde je stát abstrakcí, vzniklo vakuum. V něm se zrodil Mikuláš Vareha – muž, který pochopil, že v době chaosu lidé netouží po svobodě, ale po jistotě. Vybudoval impérium z milionových podvodů a stal se „králem Zemplína“, uctívaným těmi, na něž zbytek světa zapomněl. Film ho zachycuje po 11 letech ve vězení jako hrdinu ionescovské drámy Král umírá. Vrací se do trosek panstvý. Navzdory schizofrenní realitě – kdy přes den úřaduje v pevnosti a v noci spí v zchátralém paneláku – jeho ego odmítá kapitulovat. Rozhodne se pro restart: v blátě a rzi plánuje vybudovat nové království. Do tohoto světa přichází Erik. Vareha byl pro něj superhrdinou už od školních let, ale teprve návrat z „velkého světa“ evropských metropolí, poznamenaný anonymitou a nejistotou, ho přiměl k radikálnímu kroku. Erik opouští západ, stěhuje se ke svému idolu jako učeň. Podobně jako Herzogův Fitzcarraldo, i Vareha chce do chudobného regionu přinést symbol velkoleposti, aby dokázal, že stále žije. Uprostřed příprav na tento bizarní triumf však přichází nečekaný zlom: Vareha při krmení slepic náhle umírá. Loď se potápí, kapitán je mrtvý a Erik zůstává sám. V absolutním tichu sleduje, jak se sen definitivně mění v prach. Snímek je studií populismu a krize maskulinity. Ukazuje, jak se rodí autokraté a proč je následují ztracení mladí muži.
