Na slovensko-maďarském pomezí, daleko od Bratislavy i Budapešti, si Mikuláš Vareha vybudoval vlastní „stát ve státě“. Bývalý policista zbohatl na daňových podvodech za miliony eur, rozdával práci a jídlo, pořádal vesnické slavnosti a stal se „králem Zemplína“. Lidé, na které stát zapomněl, ho bezmezně obdivovali.
Film ho zachycuje po téměř deseti letech strávených ve vězení. Jeho království leží v troskách, ale jeho ego se odmítá vzdát. Uprostřed bahna a rzi plánuje návrat. Snaží se oživit nepojízdné limuzíny, svolává své lidi a sní o zoologické zahradě se slonem uprostřed zemplínské roviny. Jeho majetek se však dál rozpadá a spolu s ním chátrá i jeho tělo.
Na začátku roku 2026 udělá realita nečekaný střih. Vareha náhle umírá při krmení slepic. Všechno, co po sobě zanechal, připadne Daniele, partnerce, která po jeho boku stála desítky let a jako jediná dokázala, aby jí skutečně naslouchal. Udělá to, čeho on nikdy nebyl schopen. Přijme, že je konec. Auta rozprodá v dražbě, budovy prodá, co prodat nejde, nechá zbourat, a nakonec se rozloučí i s legendární čerpací stanicí, kde všechno začalo.
V tragikomickém paradoxu však zároveň objedná nadživotní sochu na jeho hrob, pracuje na knize o jeho životě a podporuje vznik písní o „králi Zemplína“. Z impéria nakonec zbude hromada šrotu. Mýtus, který Varehu obklopuje, ale dál sílí. Film zkoumá populismus, ukazuje, jak se člověk jako Vareha dostane k moci a proč ho jeho vlastní legenda přežije.
