Moje sestra Anna

The feature-length hybrid documentary My Sister Anna is a cinematic novel about a young woman’s coming-of-age against the backdrop of two contrasting worlds: the gray, fast-mutating landscape of post-communist Prague and the culturally explosive Paris of the 1990s.

Director Jakub Wagner tells the story of his older sister, Anna, who in the early 1990s joined thousands of Eastern European girls heading West for a taste of freedom. From Paris, she sends home dozens of letters and cassette tapes filled with hope and new horizons, while back in Prague, her artistic family grapples with depression and disillusionment over the wild rise of early capitalism. In Paris, Anna experiences a passionate love affair with an African dancer but gradually collides with the harsh reality of social barriers, cultural divides, and her position as cheap domestic labor. Her Parisian dream deteriorates into deep unfulfillment, leading to alienation upon returning home and her premature death at the age of 42 due to AIDS.

Moving far beyond a standard biography, the film evolves into a self-reflective journey of a brother using the cinematic medium to establish a dialogue with his sister that never happened in life, exploring the ultimate limits of memory and human freedom. Operating on a radical formal dialogue, the project seamlessly interweaves scripted 35mm re-enactments, authentic family archives (letters, photographs, and Anna's own Hi8 video diary), and meta-cinematic disruptions where the director steps in front of the camera

My Sister Anna intentionally destabilizes the line between documentary and fiction to capture the inherently speculative nature of memory.
