CURRENT – ART AND URBAN SPACE is a transdisciplinary festival for art in urban space in Stuttgart. The festival, acting at the interface between art and the examination of urban space, develops exemplary formats to experimentally explore artistic forms, strategies and practices in the context of the city. CURRENT wants to integrate artistic perspectives into urban development processes in the long term.
Stuttgart is an example of a city in transition: Enormous infrastructure projects with long-term conversion measures, the development of new quarters, a dynamic and diverse urban society as well as comprehensive technological and economic transformations harbor both potential and dangers such as displacement problems for public space. In this context, CURRENT – ART AND URBAN SPACE would like to discuss and strengthen the role of art and culture for the future development of cities.
The festival CURRENT – ART AND URBAN SPACE was founded by Laura Bernhardt in 2020 as an active contribution to the discussions about a realignment of the art in architecture and art in public space programs. It is a project of Art Public Space – Culture Matters gUG. From 2022, the festival will be part of the new program for art in public space being developed by the state capital of Stuttgart.
