The gay and lesbian film festival Pink Apple was founded in 1997 by a handful of film enthusiasts in Frauenfeld, Thurgau. The Swiss "apple canton" was the inspiration for the name. The aim was to "promote homosexual emancipation and acceptance" in the province - on a cultural basis. In 1998, the festival was held for the first time - with 10 films and a lot of audience participation in the small Cinema Luna in Frauenfeld.
