Named after the practice of clandestine dissemination of censored and forbidden texts in communist states, Samizdat Eastern European Film Festival is an audience-focused film festival based in Glasgow. The first edition took place at CCA Glasgow, 27 September - 1 October 2022 and online, on the streaming platform Klassiki, 27 September - 13 October 2022. With a diverse programme of meticulously curated retrospectives and new films produced within the Eastern Europe and the CIS, as well as special events (online panel discussions, a screening of 'Salt for Svanetia' with a score performed live, and a showcase of Ukrainian short films), Samizdat was the first Scotland-based festival dedicated exclusively to Eastern European cinema.
The 2022 edition was supported by Film Hub Scotland, part of the BFI’s Film Audience Network, and funded by Screen Scotland and National Lottery funding from the BFI.
It was jointly funded by the European Cultural Foundation (Culture of Solidarity Fund — Ukraine Special Edition).
