Apordoc – Associação pelo Documentário

O společnosti

Apordoc is a non-profit cultural organisation and its main goals are to support, promote and foster the
work and interest in documentary film. It was created as an extension of a series of informal meetings
and screenings, known in Portugal as “Encontros da Malaposta”. Since 1990, these meetings had
gathered filmmakers, programmers, documentary lovers, producers who watched and discussed
documentary cinema together. Nowadays with around 350 associates, Apordoc is the driving force behind a process that defined a strong and stable ground for documentary in Portugal. In this scope,Apordoc has several projects and activities targeting different groups: general public; film professionals, artists, curators and other agents; children and youngster, families and teachers; senior groups; groups with intellectual and physical disabilities.
Apordoc organizes the following main events:

1. Doclisboa International Film Festival
Doclisboa seeks to imagine reality through new cinematic forms of perception, reflection and action, placing filmmaking into dialogue with its history to question the present of cinema. Doclisboa is interested in films that are rigorous about their conceptual and formal implications; films that experiment with cinema’s artistic and political possibilities and refuse to be categorised; films that engage with and mirror the complexity of the world. Doclisboa offers a ground where cinema and the contemporary are investigated as acts of being together in, and with, time. During 11 days in October, Doclisboa presents around 250 film screenings, debates, masterclasses, workshops, but also other activities for the general public, film professionals, schools and families in 6 different venues in Lisbon. Over the past 18 years, Doclisboa has built a prestigious, trusted image with an international profile. The festival’s first edition took place in 2002, and it soon became an event of cultural reference both at home and abroad. With a clear vocation to public service, Doclisboa is based on values upholding citizenship, sustainability, research, creativity, training and social responsibility. Doclisboa received the EFFE Label in 2015-2016, 2017-2018 and has applied for 2019-2020 (EFFE Label is Europe’s quality stamp for remarkable arts festivals).

2. Doc's Kingdom International Seminar
Doc's Kingdom is a discussion forum on contemporary documentary film contrary to the quantitative dimension of festivals and the formatting of academic space. What is proposed here is an experience of cinema and a global human experience that will hopefully become one. During 5 days, through the intensive schedule of screenings and discussions and through the opportunity to be immersed in an inspiring place, around 100 participants are extracted from their regular contexts and able to get in touch with local culture of Arcos de Valdevez in Northern Portugal.

3. Lisbon Docs Co-production and Financing Forum
One of the main workshop and pitching events for documentary in Portugal, it is a reference for film professionals looking for new tools and strategies to finance and co-produce their documentary projects.

4. Educational Project / other Projects and Activities
Apordoc also works on audience development and film literacy activities: its educational project hosts several activities throughout the year. It stems from the belief that documentary film, as a form of art, is a human expression able to foster a more critical, informed, open and difference-embracing citizenship, aiming at building a fairer, more tolerant, and thus stronger society. These activities represent an opportunity for children and youths to access content and experiences that foster the learning of curricular content. Every year, we organize sessions and debates in schools, and take schools to the cinemas; develop long-term workshops with 1st grade schools and kindergartens; host workshops for children and families during weekends and holidays. Apordoc promotes documentary showcases along the year in around 20 other cities outside Lisbon, and participates in several international projects aiming at fostering the documentary film culture

5. Arché
Arché is a laboratory of professional activities aimed at directors, producers and other film professionals. It intends to provide tools for the creation of new film projects, as well as to provide moments of reflection within their creation and formation. Arché is born out of the need and responsibility Apordoc has experienced and identified for the creation of a space of thought and creative development for film professionals and independent structures, capable of fostering projects and assuring their identity and quality. Arché consists of three workshops, each of four sessions, and meetings – masterclasses, presentations and debates – dedicated to professional questions, crucial to the development and visibility of a film today.
