Since the 1950’s, WFO has concentrated on producing documentary films that dealt with environmental and social awareness issues. Many renowned directors worked for the company at the beginning of their careers, such as Wojciech Has, Krzysztof Zanussi, and Jan Jakub Kolski. The production company was also first tor recognize the talents of cinematographers, such as: Piotr Sobocinski, Jerzy Zielinski, Zbigniew Rybczynski, and Pawel Edelman. Throughout its existence, the company has garnered over 1200 awards for its films.
