Dajori (dir. Martin Páv, Nicolas Kourek, 2024, CZ, 90’)
Winner of the Jury Prize for Original Approach and the Audience Award at Ji.hlava, pitched at Czech Docs: Coming Soon at East Doc Platform 2024. The film, meaning "mother" in Romani, follows Marie, a mother of three in Varnsdorf, as she takes in two of her sister’s children who face homelessness due to their mother’s struggles with addiction. Over three years, Dajori explores Marie's efforts to provide these children with stability and love, offering a moving portrait of resilience and family bonds amidst hardship.
Fakir (dir. Roman Ďuriš, 2024, SK, CZ, PL, 82’)
Among other IDF projects an Ex Oriente Film 2021 graduate and part of the East Silver Caravan distribution in 2024, this documentary follows 23-year-old Dalibor, an ex-convict determined to protect his younger brother from their abusive father in a tense custody battle. Amid personal struggles, Dalibor finds solace as a fakir in a small travelling circus, where the bed of nails becomes his unexpected sanctuary. Recently awarded Best Cinematography in the Czech Joy section at Ji.hlava, Fakir captures Dalibor’s resilience as he strives for freedom and healing, breaking cycles of trauma and defying conventional recovery ideas.
The Other One (dir. Marie-Magdalena Kochová, 2024, CZ, SK, 87’)
The East Doc Forum 2022 graduate and part of the East Silver Caravan 2024, The Other One has received critical acclaim, earning a Special Mention for the Silver Eye Award 2024 and the MDR Film Prize at DOK Leipzig 2024. This observational documentary follows eighteen-year-old Johana, a “glass child” who feels overlooked as she balances her aspirations with the responsibility of helping care for her younger sister with a disability. In her final year of high school, Johana struggles to break free from family expectations, seeking a path beyond her role as caretaker. The film sensitively addresses the often-overlooked experiences of siblings in families caring for children with special needs, giving voice to those who feel invisible and yearning for independence.
World Between Us (dir. Marie Dvořáková, 2024, CZ, US, 90’)
Winner of the Best Cinematography Award and the Student Jury Award in the Czech Joy section at Ji.hlava 2024, this documentary that participated in the East Doc Platform 2022 by Marie Dvořáková captures the journey of Czech-born photographer Marie Tomanová. After leaving Mikulov for the USA as an au pair, Tomanová has since risen to shoot campaigns for iconic brands like Nike and publications like Vogue CS. Despite her international success, she remains relatively unknown in her home country—a place that once offered few creative opportunities. Through the intimate portrayal of the two Maries, the film delves into themes of identity, belonging, and the complexities of the American dream.
