Synopsis

Sofke’s World is a biographical story of Sofija Cikron, an immigrant LGBT member living in Berlin. Sofija was born as an illegitimate child of a Croatian mother and an Albanese father. After she was put up for adoption as a baby, nurses had been taking care of her until she got adopted, becoming the third child in a foster family living on the outskirts of Zagreb. A mere seven hours before the borders of former Yugoslavia closed down, Sofija with her newborn daughter, left everything behind and went to Berlin. On her own in Germany, Sofija applied for asylum and discovered the well-established lesbian scene in Berlin. Today, she lives in a former squat called BEGiNE, inhabited solely by women. Her home has been a safe haven of many marginalized people from the Balkans. Sofke’s World bears witness to a secluded LGBT community from Eastern Europe and their road to acquired freedom.
