In development

Ice-hockey is not just some sport. It's related to the culture, politics and society of Czechs and Slovaks like no other! Chase looks for these connections in talks with witnesses of past dark times and moments of glory too.

Animated documentary Chase (Štvanice) brings back memories of the times of glory of Czechoslovak hockey, its achievements, specific players but also the dark moments like the year 1950. It’s based on authentic testimonies of living hockey witnesses and archive materials. It follows not only their personal fate but their transformations in society, politics and culture on the background of development of this sport discipline. Hockey is the sport which is linked with the fate of Czechs and Slovaks like no other.

Chase is based on authoress’ personal research, its uniqueness lies in the investigation of history of Czechoslovak hockey from artist’s point of view – hockey layman which is diametrically different than through leaderboards and statistics, taking into account the contemporary social and political context. The documentary is supposed to change the view of Czechoslovak hockey from only Nagano, golden hattrick or Jaromir Jagr.

It also brings a very personal narrative through individual, often changed fates of distinguished hockey representatives, who live mostly forgotten now. The animation carefully works with archive photographs and video recordings; it is not trying to illustrate but to be worthy partner for the audio materials. At the same time, it is important for us to contribute to seeing sport as part of culture not as its counterpart. It is supposed to highlight the links of these two worlds and their mutual concurrence as well as to turn the stereotypical views on hockey, sportsman and sport in general.
