The Gravediggers of Terezín

Terezínští hrobaři

Directing: Olga Strusková

Synopsis

The documentary film depicts the events of the Lidice tragedy by means of the little known story of 30 inmates of the Terezín concentration camp. Until now, the Lidice tragedy has been recalled mostly through the witness accounts of Lidice women who returned to their plundered and burnt homes after the end of World War II. It seems as if the story of Lidice men ended by their slaughter. Since that frightful night when they were shot and put in a mass grave, only silence and commemoration ceremonies followed. By revealing the common fate of 30 randomly selected Terezín inmates and 173 Lidice men who became the target of Nazi malevolence, the film wants to commemorate the sacrifice they made for all of us. By means of its “cross-genre” treatment, the film will address primarily young audiences with the aim of pointing out the dreadful consequences of Nazism while warning against the growing threat of neo-Nazism today.
