Synopse

SonoLog is a film speaking of two theatres, two practices coded in different histories, cultures and languages at home on the opposite ends of the globe. It is a film about the people who live these theatres – as they create theatre, theatre writes the story of their lives. It is a film about an encounter and what may arise from it, how an encounter can change theatre, how it can change life.It is a film that wishes to be a part of this meeting, a film-meeting that is interested in the uniqueness of the moment and the atmosphere rather than dramatic narration – just like theatre Noh. A film-meeting interested in the introspective dynamic of emotion and thought rather than the external dynamic of events – just like the Sonorous theatre.
Just as both theatres renounce rigid dramaturgy and yet follow a strictly coded formal framework, this documentary film cannot be made on the basis of a predefined screenplay. Its foundation rests on the authors’ adherence to a genre in which narration is immanent to the form and where portrayal is made using impression, rhythm and duration rather than a logical string of cause-consequence events. The foundations of the documentary SonoLog rest on lyrical impression, on aesthetical and philosophical contemplation. Its nature runs parallel to the nature of both theatres which represent the subject matter documented. By harnessing the lyrical power of film language, we did our best to make film an equal, third partner in this exceptional meeting of arts.
