Author: Marta Obršálová

The 52. Karlovy Vary International Film Festival is just starting today. As in previous years, organizers have not missed the documentary genre and two anticipated premieres are included on the programme.

In the competition of documentary films, the world premiere will feature The White World According to Daliborek by Czech filmmaker Vit Klusak. The international premiere is also on the documentary about the famous Slovak singer This Is Not Me, directed by Miro Remo. The Central and Eastern European region has two other representatives in the competition. The Romanian documentary essay Tarzan’s Testicles ponders the relationship between humans and primates in order to point out the role of faith and ethics in scientific research. The audience will certainly appreciate a portrait of a Croatian free diving record-holder, My Life without Air, which takes place exclusively under water. You can find a complete list of films in the competition here.

Within the industry section of the festival will be held on July 4 the 13th edition of Docu Talents. During two hours directors and producers of the selected feature-length documentaries will introduce their projects during eight-minute presentations. Selected projects are at the production or post-production stage with expected premiere between August 2017 and in July 2018. Since 2005, Docu Talents has been a launch pad for a number of documentaries. Among others, the Czech film FC Roma was already presented in the past. Nowadays, he is successfully screened in the framework of the KineDok selection in eight European countries. This year, Docu Talents have chosen a Latvian-Czech co-production D is for Division that attended the East Doc Platform 2016. The event is organised by the Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival, in cooperation with the Karlovy Vary IFF. The list of all projects from Central and Eastern Europe you can find here.

Eight films will run for the Eurimages Lab Project Award in amount of 50 000 EUR. Three projects deserves our attention: the experiential film Aleph (d. Iva Radivojevic) which went through the workshop Ex Oriente Film 2015 and was presented at East Doc Platform 2016 or The Sound is Innocent by Johana Švarcová, the participant of Ex Oriente Film 2016 and East Doc Platform 2017. We cross our fingers also for the team of the project War Under False Pretences (d. Aleksandar Nikolic, p. Gregor Streiber and Monika Braid) who came to this year´s East Doc Platform with another interesting project. The most promising project will be chosen by the international jury consisting of Maria Giannattasio (Directorate-General for Cinema), Cedomir Kolar (A.S.A.P. Films) and Susana Santor Rodrigues (VAIVEM).

The IFF Karlovy Vary will also attend the IDF representatives (Tereza Šimíková, Kristýna Genttnerová, Kristýna Balaban, Anna Kaslová and Walter Nagy). If you want to meet us, please find direct contacts here.
