27. 2. 2018

Author: Rebecca De Pas, Marta Jallageas

The 15th edition of the Ex Oriente Film workshop, organized by the Institute of Documentary Film, is opening its final session. This part will deal with practical skills necessary for the presentation of a project in a professional pitch setting and with different aspects related to promotion and distribution, such as festival strategies, online distribution, sales management and marketing. This third and last session of the 2017 edition will culminate with the East Doc Forum pitching and the related network session with more than 50 international decision makers.

Ex Oriente Film brings internationally renowned experts who provide participants with intensive training and consulting. Some of the tutors will also deliver lectures open to the general public. The welcome session (March 3, 5.45 p.m.) will be hosted by Ikka Vehkalahti and Mikael Opstrup, the two lead workshop tutors. Peter Jaeger will give an interactive session designed for film professionals, dealing with sales agent’s contracts and outlining all the important basics.

Filmmakers and cinephiles should not miss a masterclass by editor, actress and producer Dounia Sichov. Dounia works with some of the most prominent voices in contemporary cinema, such as Abel Ferrara, Sharunas Bartas and Denis Coté. She edited, for instance, Atlas - the latest film by the iconic Magnum photographer Antoine d'Agata - as well as its installation version. Her versatile profile makes her a unique figure in today’s international cinema. In her masterclass, she will share her experience in the editing room in both documentary and fiction and tell us about what it takes to reach the final cut. The masterclass takes place March 4 at 6 p.m. at the Cervantes Institute.

On Monday, Vanja Kaludjercic (Holland Film Meetings, Sarajevo IFF, Rotterdam IFF, Les Arcs IFF) will guide the audience through the fast-changing world of international film festivals. This session will provide in-depth insights on how to deal with festival strategies and it is designed mainly for film professionals. Directors, sales agents and other visitors will enjoy a lecture by Fraser Bensted, the man behind the marketing campaigns for movies such as Billy Elliot, Slumdog Millionaire and Searching for Sugar Man in which he will unveil the secrets of creating the perfect film campaign.

Festival director Cintia Gil (Doclisboa, Portugal), Slovak director and producer Robert Kirchhoff, Czech producer Jiří Konečný and festival director Karel Och (Karlovy Vary IFF) complete the international panel of tutors invited specifically for this session. The Ex Oriente Film workshop lead tutors include producer and consultant Ikka Vehkalahti, Head of Studies of the European Documentary Network Mikael Opstrup, director and script editor Ivana Pauerová Miloševičová, and director and producer Filip Remunda.
